Coast FIRE FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most when using the Coast FIRE calculator. This is not financial advice.

Does reaching Coast FIRE mean I can retire now?

No. It means the model projects that your existing investments could meet a later retirement goal. It does not fund today’s bills automatically.

Are Coast FI and Coast FIRE different calculations?

They usually describe the same milestone: enough invested to potentially reach financial independence later without further retirement contributions.

Does the result include Social Security?

Not automatically. If you plan around outside income, account for when it starts and how dependable it is. A benefit starting later cannot simply cover every earlier year.

Can the result change?

Yes. Returns, spending, taxes, inflation and your retirement date can all change. Review the assumptions rather than treating the date as fixed.

Where do I enter my own plan?

Use the Coast FIRE calculator with your ages, invested balance and retirement goal. For the arithmetic, see how to calculate Coast FIRE.
